12 Printing Basics Worth Knowing

These simple terms prevent a large percentage of artwork, quotation and production misunderstandings.

90 × 50 mmA common UAE business-card finished size. 85 × 55 mm is also used.
210 × 297A4 in millimetres.
148 × 210A5. Half of A4.
105 × 148A6. Half of A5 and roughly one quarter of A4.
GSMGrams per square metre: paper weight, not a direct thickness measurement.
3 mmA common bleed allowance for many small-format print jobs.
300 PPIA common image-resolution target for close-viewed print at final size.
CMYKA common colour model for printing. Screens usually display RGB.
VectorBest for logos, icons, cut lines and artwork that must scale cleanly.
mmCommon physical-thickness unit for acrylic, PVC, ACP, metal and other rigid sheets.
ProofThe final content/artwork check before production.
ApprovalGovernment, authority, landlord, mall, building or site approval may be required before some installations.

01 · Size Language

Finished Size, Artwork Size, Bleed Size — They Are Not The Same

When asking for a quotation, give the finished size first. The designer may then add bleed or other production margins around that final size.

29.7 × 42 cm

A4

Business Card

90 × 50 mm

5 × 9 cm is common in the UAE. Do not assume every old card or imported template uses the same dimensions.

33 × 48 cm production sheet

This can refer to a production sheet used for imposition — placing several smaller jobs on one sheet before cutting. It is not a finished A-size, and the machine’s usable area may be smaller due to gripper and production margins.

Portrait vs Landscape

Always state orientation where it matters. A “20 × 30” sign can be interpreted differently if width and height are not clearly identified.

Pages and sides are different: one sheet printed front and back has two printed sides. A folded brochure or booklet has panels/pages created by folding. For saddle-stitched booklets, total page planning normally works in groups of four because each folded sheet creates four pages.

02 · Paper Basics

GSM, Coated Paper, Uncoated Paper, Texture & Feel

GSM = grams per square metre. It measures basis weight. It does not directly tell you caliper/thickness, stiffness, coating, texture or how premium a sheet will feel.

80–100 GSM

Common office/document territory: letters, forms and general paper applications.

130–170 GSM

Often used for flyers, leaflets, brochure pages and promotional inserts.

250–400 GSM

Heavier card territory for cards, tags, covers and premium printed pieces.

Same GSM ≠ same paper

Two 300 GSM stocks can differ in thickness, stiffness, whiteness, grain, texture and print response.

Art / Coated Paper

Smooth coated surface commonly used when colour reproduction and a polished commercial finish matter.

Woodfree / Uncoated

More natural paper feel and generally easier to write on than heavily coated stock.

Kraft

Natural brown material. Printed colours, especially light colours, are influenced by the brown substrate.

Textured / Specialty

Texture can change ink coverage, foil, UV, embossing and fine-detail results. A sample is often the best reference.

03 · Artwork & Colour

A Good-Looking Phone Image Is Not Necessarily Print-Ready

Commercial printing needs the correct final size, sufficient resolution, bleed, safe margins, usable fonts, correct cut lines where relevant, and artwork prepared for the actual production method.

300 PPI

Common close-view target

Large-format graphics viewed from farther away may use a lower effective resolution depending on output size and viewing distance.

3 mm

Common bleed

Edge-to-edge backgrounds extend outside the final trim so minor cutting movement does not reveal an unwanted white edge.

CMYK

Print colour model

Phone and monitor RGB colours — especially bright/neon colours — may not reproduce the same way in CMYK print.

PDF / AI / EPS

Useful production formats

Vector artwork is especially useful for logos, line work, engraving, cut vinyl, die lines and large scaling.

Bleed → Trim → Safe Area

Bleed is extra image outside the cut. Trim is the final edge. Safe area keeps important text, QR codes and logos away from the cutting/folding danger zone.

Fonts

Missing fonts can change a design. For final production, fonts may need to be embedded or converted to outlines depending on the file and process.

Pantone / Spot Colours

If exact brand colour matching is critical, tell us before production. Standard CMYK, vinyl colours, screen inks and material surfaces can all reproduce colour differently.

QR Codes & Barcodes

Test the actual code before approval. Keep sufficient clear space around it and do not make it unnecessarily tiny, distorted or low-resolution.

Proof responsibility: before approving artwork, check spelling, Arabic/English text, phone numbers, website, social handles, QR codes, quantities, dates, names, colours, size, orientation and any legally required information. Once approved and produced, changes can require reprinting.

04 · AI Images

AI Can Show The Idea. It Does Not Automatically Create The Product.

ChatGPT and other AI image tools are useful for inspiration and concept direction. But an AI-generated object may include impossible construction, inconsistent thicknesses, fake reflections, unreadable text, incorrect logos or materials that do not exist in that exact form.

Good use of AI

  • Concept and style direction
  • Shape inspiration
  • Background concepts
  • Mockups for discussion
  • Explaining a visual idea

What must be verified

  • Exact dimensions
  • Real material and thickness
  • Logo accuracy
  • Joinery and supports
  • Production method and stability

Why custom costs more

A ready-made memento may only need a printed plate or engraving. A fully custom memento can require design engineering, material sourcing, cutting, shaping, fabrication, assembly, polishing, testing and individual finishing.

Blue Oasis approach: AI reference images can be used as inspiration. We may redraw or redesign them into a realistic production file, and the final price is based on the actual approved specification — not on how simple the AI image looks.

05 · Production Methods

The Same Logo Can Be Produced In Very Different Ways

Material, quantity, colour count, durability, surface, finishing, budget and deadline all affect the best method.

Digital Printing

Flexible for many short and medium runs with relatively simple setup.

Offset Printing

Common for larger commercial quantities. Plates and setup create strong quantity economies.

Screen Printing

Uses a prepared screen. Colour count, material and setup affect price and suitability.

UV Printing

Direct print on many rigid items. Surface, coating, transparency and white ink requirements matter.

UV DTF

Detailed transfer branding for many hard surfaces. Adhesion still depends on the actual surface.

DTF Garment Printing

Film-based heat transfer for detailed multicolour garment graphics.

Sublimation

Used on compatible coated blanks and polyester-rich materials.

Laser Engraving / Marking

Result depends on the base material and coating. Engraving does not always produce a chosen ink colour.

Embroidery

Thread-based branding. Very tiny details and thin lines may need simplification during digitising.

Common finishing terms

Matte laminationGloss laminationSpot UVFoilingDie cutCreasingPerforationNumberingEmbossDeboss
Binding basics

Saddle stitch uses staples; perfect binding uses a glued spine; spiral/Wiro uses a punched coil or wire; hardcover construction is a separate premium process.

NCR basics

“1+1” usually means one original plus one copy; “1+2” means original plus two copies. Numbering, perforation, book quantity and colour can affect setup.

One colour vs full colour

A one-colour print can be a very different production job from CMYK/full-colour printing, especially in screen, offset and specialty processes.

06 · Stickers, Signs & Rigid Materials

“I Need A Sticker” Is Not Enough Information

The correct material depends on the surface, temperature, indoor/outdoor exposure, desired life, removal requirement, transparency, visibility and installation method.

White Vinyl

General branding and labels where an opaque white base is needed.

Clear Sticker

Background remains visible. White ink may be needed to prevent colours looking transparent.

Frosted Sticker

Used on glass for privacy and decorative effects.

One-Way Vision

Perforated window film often used for glass/vehicle visibility applications. Lighting conditions affect the one-way effect.

Reflective

Designed to reflect light. The correct grade must suit the intended application.

Security / Tamper-Evident

Can leave VOID evidence, fracture, destruct, or use other tamper features after removal.

Floor Sticker

Requires the right adhesive and protective surface for the location, foot traffic and cleaning conditions.

Vehicle Vinyl

Vehicle graphics require suitable material, clean surfaces, correct measurements and any required authority approval before application.

Acrylic

Premium rigid plastic, often clear, frosted, coloured or mirrored. Thickness is normally stated in mm.

PVC / Foam PVC

Lightweight plastic board widely used for signs and displays. Not the same appearance as acrylic.

ACP

Aluminium composite panel commonly used in signage and cladding-related applications. Grade and thickness matter.

Foam Board

Very light indoor display board; not intended for every outdoor or impact-prone application.

Aluminium / Metal

Useful for durable plates, tags and signs. Coating determines whether print, engraving or marking is suitable.

Fabric / Flex

Large-format banner and display materials behave differently in wind, lighting, stretching and finishing.

07 · Installation Reality

Printing The Graphic Is Only One Part Of An Installation Job

For wall graphics, shop branding, vehicle graphics, glass stickers, signboards and outdoor work, installation conditions can change the material, manpower, time and cost.

Height & Access

Ground-floor work is different from work requiring scaffolding, a ladder, scissor lift, boom lift or other access equipment.

Surface Condition

Dust, grease, fresh paint, texture, moisture, silicone, old adhesive, cracks and uneven surfaces can affect sticker adhesion.

Temperature & Environment

Freezers, direct UAE sun, hot metal, humidity, steam, chemicals and cleaning agents can require different materials.

Working Hours

Malls, towers, offices, roads and managed properties may restrict installation to approved hours or require night access.

Electricity / Isolation

Illuminated signs or powered equipment may need suitable electrical access and safe isolation by authorised parties.

Site Survey

For complex installation, physical measurement and site photos may be needed before final quotation or fabrication.

08 · UAE Compliance

Government Approvals Come Before Regulated Work.

Blue Oasis follows UAE laws and the requirements of the relevant emirate, municipality, transport authority, free zone, property management or other competent authority. Some advertising, vehicle graphics, outdoor signs, public-space work and installation activities may require an approval, permit or NOC before production or installation.

Our compliance rule

Where an approval is legally or operationally required, the job should not proceed as if the approval does not exist. The exact authority and requirement can change by emirate, location, type of advertisement, vehicle, building and installation method.

Option 1 · Customer obtains approval

The customer can obtain the required permit/NOC and provide it before the regulated production or installation stage.

Option 2 · Blue Oasis coordinates

Where the relevant process allows and we agree to handle it, Blue Oasis can assist or coordinate the approval process using the documents supplied by the customer.

Government fees are customer cost

Official permit, approval, municipality, transport authority, inspection or similar third-party charges are payable by the customer unless a written quotation explicitly states otherwise.

Fees can change

Government and property-management fee schedules can change. We use the amount required by the relevant authority at the time of processing.

Examples of approvals or permissions that may be relevant

Vehicle advertising / vehicle graphics
Where the relevant emirate/authority requires approval.
Outdoor signs & advertisements
Municipality, development zone or other competent authority requirements may apply.
Building / mall / free-zone NOC
Property management or landlord permission may be required before installation.
Public-space / right-of-way use
Work that occupies a pavement, parking bay or other controlled public area may require a permit.
Night / restricted-hours access
Some sites require separate approval or work permits for installation hours.
Safety / access equipment
Scaffolding, lifts, work platforms or road-side work can trigger additional safety/site requirements.

Work-area parking / access charges for scaffolding and installation

This does not mean ordinary parking for our vehicle. Sometimes we need to reserve or pay for a parking bay, pavement area or controlled work zone so scaffolding, ladders, a scissor lift, boom lift, work platform or other installation equipment can be placed safely while sticker pasting or sign installation is carried out.

If the authority, building, mall, parking department or site operator charges for that work area, temporary occupation, access, permit, gate pass, loading area, security deposit or related facility, the charge is additional and is payable by the customer. If Blue Oasis pays it on the customer’s behalf, it will be added to the job as an external/site cost. Any separate Blue Oasis coordination/service charge, if applicable, should be quoted before proceeding.

Important: this guide gives general operational information, not a fixed legal determination for every UAE location. Approval requirements vary by emirate, authority, site and advertisement type. The applicable requirement should be checked for the specific job before regulated work begins.

09 · Common UAE Printing Mistakes

Things Customers Commonly Assume — And Why They Cause Problems

1. “The WhatsApp image is high quality.”

Messaging apps and screenshots can compress images. A logo that looks fine on a phone may pixelate when printed large.

2. “Make it exactly the colour on my phone.”

Phones use RGB light and different brightness settings. Print uses ink, material and finishing; exact colour matching may require a controlled reference.

3. “All 300 GSM paper is the same.”

GSM is weight. Stock, coating, thickness, stiffness, whiteness and texture can vary.

4. “All stickers are waterproof.”

Paper labels, vinyl, laminated vinyl, floor film, vehicle vinyl and security materials have very different exposure limits.

5. “This wall is clean enough.”

Dust, textured paint, fresh paint, moisture, silicone or old adhesive can cause lifting and bubbles.

6. “It is only 500 pieces, so it should be half the 1,000 price.”

Setup, plate, screen, die, machine and minimum-charge costs may remain almost the same.

7. “The AI picture looks simple, so fabrication is simple.”

AI can hide joints, supports and manufacturing complexity. Custom fabrication is priced from the real construction plan.

8. “You can measure it from the photo.”

Perspective creates scale distortion. Exact signage, vehicle and fabrication work may require physical measurements or a confirmed drawing.

9. “Outdoor means permanent.”

UAE heat, UV exposure, dust, cleaning, wind and substrate condition affect life. Outdoor suitability does not mean unlimited durability.

10. “Glass sticker looks the same from both sides.”

Clear print, white ink, reverse printing, inside mounting, outside mounting and lighting can change the appearance dramatically.

11. “We can install anytime.”

Malls, towers, offices and controlled sites may require work permits, NOCs, approved hours, gate passes and access arrangements.

12. “Approval can be handled later.”

For regulated work, required approvals should be identified before committing to final production or installation.

13. “The same sticker works inside a freezer.”

Low temperature, condensation and repeated cleaning can require a different adhesive/material combination.

14. “A logo from the website is enough.”

Web logos may be tiny raster files. For engraving, cut vinyl and large signs we often need a proper vector logo.

15. “Proof approval only means design.”

Approval should include content, spellings, contact details, size, orientation and layout — not only whether the design looks attractive.

16. “Changing the artwork after production starts is easy.”

Once plates, screens, dies, printing, cutting or fabrication have started, changes may create new cost and delay.

10 · Quantity & Price

Why Price Does Not Move In A Straight Line With Quantity

Printing price is often a combination of fixed setup cost plus material, running, finishing and delivery/installation cost.

Fixed setup

Artwork preparation, plate, screen, die, machine setup, test prints and minimum supplier charges may apply even at lower quantity.

Variable production

Paper, ink, material, running time and finishing increase with quantity.

Economy of quantity

Higher quantity can reduce the unit cost because setup is spread across more pieces.

Ask for the real quantity

100, 500 and 1,000 pieces can be three different production calculations — not simple proportional maths.

Also remember: urgent production, multiple artworks, individual names/numbers, special packing, delivery, installation, approvals, site-access fees and access equipment can change the final price even when the printed item itself stays the same.

11 · Why Samples Matter

Some Details Cannot Be Reliably Identified From A Photo

A picture may not show exact thickness, texture, rigidity, transparency, gloss, coating, edge construction, print method or physical scale. This is why we sometimes ask for the original sample.

Photo

Good for the general look, colour direction and concept.

Measurement

Confirms actual width, height, hole positions and thickness.

Physical sample

Shows texture, stiffness, weight, transparency, edge details and construction.

Best matching brief

Sample + dimensions + quantity + artwork + required finish + use environment.

13 · Fast Definitions

Printing Words You Will Hear Often

Raster

Pixel-based image such as JPG or PNG. Quality depends on pixel count at the final output size.

Vector

Path-based artwork that can scale without becoming pixelated. Useful for logos, engraving and cut lines.

Dieline

Technical cut/fold guide used for packaging, folders, sleeves and shaped pieces.

White ink

White printing used on transparent, coloured or dark materials so colours remain visible or a white element can be printed.

Overprint / knockout

Print-production behaviour controlling whether one colour prints over another or leaves an empty area underneath. Incorrect settings can cause unexpected output.

Rich black

A CMYK mixture used for deeper black areas in some print processes. Small black text often uses a simpler black build to reduce registration issues.

Crop marks

Marks outside the finished design that help indicate where trimming should occur.

Perforation

A line of small cuts/holes that allows a section to tear off cleanly, common on tickets and forms.
