350 GSM or 400 GSM: what should you compare?
Compare 350 GSM and 400 GSM business cards using the same paper type, size and finish. The GSM number describes weight per square metre. It does not, by itself, tell you the card’s thickness, stiffness, texture or print quality.
What does 350 GSM versus 400 GSM mean?
GSM means grams per square metre: 350 GSM is 350 grams per square metre, and 400 GSM is 400 grams per square metre. At the same card size, the specified 400 GSM stock has more paper weight.
That comparison does not make one option automatically better for your design. Paper construction and finishing also matter. Our paper and GSM guide explains these terms.
Compare more than the number
| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Paper type | Ask which stock is proposed for each GSM option. |
| Finished feel | Compare a finished sample for thickness, texture and flexibility. |
| Surface finish | Keep matte, gloss or unlaminated finishes consistent for the first comparison. |
| Artwork | Check small text, logo detail and any QR code at the finished size. |
| Everyday use | Check how the finished cards fit your wallet or card holder. |
For example, compare the same front-and-back design on both stocks with the same finish. Then compare finishes separately. This makes it easier to identify what you actually prefer.
Prepare a clear business-card enquiry
- Finished width and height, plus one-sided or two-sided artwork.
- Quantity for each staff member or design version.
- 350 GSM, 400 GSM or a request to compare both.
- Preferred finish and a photo of any reference card.
- Required date and collection or delivery preference.
Review standard 350 GSM business cards and our business-card product range. Ask Blue Oasis to confirm the proposed stock, printing method, finishing and availability for your order before approval.
350 GSM and 400 GSM business-card FAQs
Is a 400 GSM business card always thicker than a 350 GSM card?
GSM measures paper weight per area, not thickness. Different paper types and finishes can feel different, so compare the specified stock and a finished sample before choosing.
Can I use the same artwork for both paper weights?
Often the layout can stay the same when the finished size and print method remain suitable. Confirm bleed, safe margins and finishing requirements before approving the production file.
Is 350 GSM with lamination a fair comparison with unlaminated 400 GSM?
Those choices change both the paper weight and the surface finish. Ask for samples with the same finish first, then decide whether you prefer a laminated or unlaminated surface.
Which weight should I choose for cards carried in a holder?
Try finished samples in the holder you use. Compare the feel of one card and how a small stack fits; GSM alone cannot confirm the final stack thickness.
